Track and field season starts in October and runs right through to the end of March.
What is little athletics?
As the name suggests, it is based upon the sport of athletics (track and field and cross country running). There are a wide range of events from Sprints, Hurdles, Middle Distance, Race Walking, Relays, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, Long Jump, Triple Jump, and High Jump. Events are modified to suit the age, developmental stage and ability of the children. Little Athletics is the "Foundation for all Sports" as all sports use the skills developed at Little Athletics.
What age can my child attend little athletics?
Children between the ages of five (5) and sixteen (15) years can register. As soon as your child has their 5th birthday, they can join, even if it is part way through the season. Unlike other sports, you can join athletics at any point through the season.
What does little athletics cost?
Little aths costs just $170 per child for the entire year (October through to August). This includes both track & field (summer) and cross country (winter) seasons. Discounts apply to families with multiple children.
What is Track and Field (summer) Season?
Track and field season focuses on track events (running & hurdles at various distances) and field events (throwing and jumping). It starts the first week of October and finishes at the end of March (School Terms 4 & 1) and runs for approximately 20 weeks of various programs.
My child is not sporty, can they still attend?
YES, children can join with any level of skill or fitness. Our emphasis is on Family, Fun & Fitness. Children are given plenty of encouragement to achieve personal bests (PB's). Little Athletics recognises that children vary widely in shape, size and athletic ability, and is one of few sports that successfully caters for all. We encourage everyone.
Can my child try it before I register/pay?
We encourage all children to trial athletics to see if they like it. All athletes are entitled to two (2) free sessions and if they wish to continue, can register after these sessions.
When is Berwick little athletics on?
Track & Field is Saturday mornings with starting time of 8:30am and is finished by 10:30am. There is an occasional twilight event which starts at 6.00pm sharp on a Thursday or Friday evening. The younger age groups will be given priority on Twilights.
Where is little athletics held?
Berwick Little Athletics is conducted at Edwin Flack Reserve, Manuka Road Berwick.
What do I need to bring?
All you need to bring is your uniform, running shoes, water bottle, hat and sun cream.
Does my child need to attend every week?
While we encourage participation, attendance is optional. We understand families have other commitments and have no issues with children missing weeks, leaving early or arriving late.
Does my child need a uniform?
You don’t need a uniform to trial little aths. Once you are registered, you are expected to wear a uniform. For new athletes without uniforms, you can compete in causual clothes for the first week or two to avoid waiting in queues for new uniforms.
When is training?
Training will be held twice a week and is optional. More details click on the training tab.
The State Track and Field Championship is a competition for individual athletes in the Under 9 to Under 15 age groups. All athletes must compete at their Region Championship to qualify or be progressed to the State Championship. Gippsland Region Championships are held in February with the State Championship to be held in March.
The State Track and Field Championships are conducted over two days in a nominated weekend. There are nineteen (19) events offered at this Championship. Athletes can compete in a maximum of four (4) events, for which they must have qualified in at their Region Championship to be progressed to State Track and Field Championships.
U16 athletes may compete at the Region Track & Field Championship as an invitational entrant but do not progress to the State Track and Field Championship as there are no U16 events offered at the State Track & Field Championships.
Eligibility: In order to qualify for the Region Track & Field Championship, athletes must have participated in a minimum of four (4) weely centre programs prior to online registrations closing.
Events offered include: 70m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, 60m Hurdles, 80m Hurdles, 90m Hurdles, 100m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles, 1100m Walk, 1500m Walk
Conducted on the same weekend and at the same venue as the Region Track and Field Championship, the Junior Carnival is for U6-U8 to have their own event where it’s all about having fun alongside other junior athletes from the Region. Last year’s Junior Carnival saw Face Painting, a Mascot Race, Show Bags and a Colouring Competition.
